#Caerleon Wandered round home village for a day.
Most amazing fact, Roman legion had mandatory pension and also catered for AVCs!!
When did pensions become universal in UK?
Caerleon, Newport and Cardiff were not hotbeds of Welsh speakers, so little practice for Cymraeg.
The biggest disappointment, was seeing the vandalism of the old college.
South Wales university killed local colleges!
@Tanhouse1 I am very sad to hear that the old college is being vandalised. I used to visit Caerleon two or three times a year because our local tertiary college (in Gwynedd) did a PGCE course and a B.Ed course validated by Newport Uni. My husband who taught the course had to attend meetings which were held in the old college and I would go along as chauffeur and spend the day wandering around Caerleon.
@Dewines knocked down and now building site and houses.
Apparently the old frontage must be kept, but building will be luxury flats.
All rather sad, especially with all the facilities there.
Tech site and art sites in Newport gone as well.
Newport rather a depressing sight!
First visit in 40 years so all rather a shock.
@Tanhouse1 It's a few years now since we visited because we retired from teaching in 2014, so it must be 9 years at least since we were there.
I think I've only visited Newport itself twice, not counting passing through on the train to get to Cardiff.
@Dewines Newport seems very run down.
Stayed in student accommodation which was excellent value.
9 months learning Welsh, tried in Caerleon, Newport and Cardiff but never got past bore da!
Lots and lots of double signage though.
Another ten years learning will try west Wales!
