In a Wales-first (and possibly UK-first?) I've created a micro-server for Mastodon to enable local primary school children to explore social media in a safe environment. It's not connected to any other server, so only children and teachers from that school can create an account.
I'll be sharing my experiences in a blog post in due course, in case it's of interest to others. Would love to have another Welsh language primary school interested so we could have multiple schools collaborating!
Thanks to all who commented on my original post about it https://toot.wales/@davidoclubb/113639241453476269
Anybody know any Welsh language primary schools outside Cardiff that might be interested in trialling?
@davidoclubb we were contemplating to do the same. But I also see may downsides: do we want kids more on screens in the first place? Do we want to task parents with yet another login to monitor? How do we deal with inequality when some kids are on the platform and some aren't? @cymraeg
@dosch this is not an easy call. My hunch is they will end up on social media regardless so it's important to teach them how to be good fedizens. As long as they're accessing it from a Linux phone https://clubb.cymru/2024/04/25/linux-mobile-safer-phone-for-childern/
@davidoclubb ha, that would be super nice. Also, nice to hear about your experiments. We so far have:
- All parents on Signal
- Shared Nextcloud for parents and support staff to share pictures and others docs
- WordPress website on own domain and VPS
- CentOS based laptops in the classroom
- A minetest server for kids to play together in a safe space with the kids they also know from school
@dosch you are light years ahead of us... Something to aspire to!
@davidoclubb we were lucky, we started a new school; so now tech debt to deal with. Sadly the staff is all on macbooks and MS365... But we plough ahead with parents
@dosch would love to hear more about how you set up Nextcloud specifically if you are able, and the rest too lol
@dosch @davidoclubb That sounds amazing! I'm part of a small community group doing enrichment education. Would love to hear more about how you set everything up
@just_me_gi @dosch I used mastohost to set up an instance which was restricted (ie non federated) . The tech side couldn't be easier. Sadly the school didn't have the capacity to manage the student side of it so it has gone nowhere for now
@dosch thank you for sharing!
To begin with I consider that we have to protect the kids from algorithms and publicity, to do so we need own options to offer I guess.
If you have a VPS already you might check out #friendica @dosch it's ideal for a small userbase. You find more info at:
@helpers
@davidoclubb already checked out hubzilla, not sure which option suits better. Hubzilla is quite hard core decentralized I guess. Friendica might be easier to grasp for normal people.
