Well, I've made it to Police Academy 3 (of 7). Movies from the 80s definitely had a certain charm.

Now I think I need to raid the used market again for more cheesy 80s comedies.

Short Circuit, The Great Outdoors, Summer Rental, pretty much anything with John Candy, Steve Martin, Steve Guttenberg, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murrey, Eddie Murphy, Tom Hanks...pretty much anything I'd have rented on VHS back in the day.

Great Outdoors, Short Circuit and The Lost Boys are on their way.

I think I've re-aquired nearly everything I was going to, which is good because old blu-rays are getting expensive. 😅

The 80s collection is coming on slowly...another bunch of blu-rays from ebay and MusicMagpie ripped and ready for Plex.

@gavin57 Love it! I'm currently playing DVDs the (very) old-school way. How does Plex work, Gavin?

@mikehindleuk Hi Mike, Plex is an application you run on a NAS, which catalogues everything in folders you set up with music, movies, TV programmes etc. You can also pay £5 bucks a month for their subscription (Plex Pass) to enable downloads to various devices and watch their rotating selection of movies.

I use the Plex app on desktop, Apple TV etc as well as PlexAmp for music on my phone.

I'm sure there are better alternatives out there that do the same thing, but it works for me.

@gavin57 Nice one, Gavin. Sounds amazing, although all a little over my head at present.

Will start looking into this more, though, as it seems an ideal solution.

@mikehindleuk The hard part (read: expensive) is picking a NAS and enough storage for your needs....and then doing the admin for it, as you take on the role of network engineer. 🤣

The next part is getting the movies off the discs (I use MakeMKV and Handbrake for that). It's a bit of fun though.

@gavin57 OMG 🤣 Think I'll stick with the DVD player for now, but keeping an eye on this option for the future.

Thanks for the heads up about importing them too. Was wondering what people use.

Great blog post and so good to see so many folks reverting back to the old ways 🙌🏻
