@Mjo321@mstdn.social I felt hiraeth all my life without knowing what it was or having a word for it. In 1999 we moved to Llangollen having tried north, south and middle England and felt weirdly at home. Then after 17 happy years we moved to be nearer the grandchildren and I'm devastated. #hiraeth
@pthane @Mjo321 I grew up not too far away, on the Welsh side of Llanymynech.
Having lived there most of my life, and seeing no opportunities there in science and technology, and couldn't wait to leave for university then go seek my fortune in London.
Some years on and I definitely understand hiraeth. Fortunately tech is one of the careers where remote work is very much still the norm, so with some luck I'll be moving back there. The housing market has other opinions.
@jake_arkinstall @Mjo321@mstdn.social Good luck with the move. It was tech of a sort that enabled us to move there, I was support manager (ie Jack of all trades) for a small co. supplying Cad/Cam hardware and software to the education sector based in a tiny village near Mold. When I fell out with the boss I turned my sideline, freelance tech writing, into my full time job WFH in my garden office. Retired now but God I miss Llangollen.
