we said our good-byes to a good family friend of the past 60 years. The Beech (Fagus grandifolia) tree that my father and I planted in 1963 is suffering badly from beech leaf disease. (more here:) yff.yale.edu/news/beech-leaf-d
It's starting to drop branches and is becoming hazardous, so we have had no choice but to call in the arborists to take it down. It's a sad time and it will be missed. I post this to honor it's life and mark it's passing. 1/

In it's lifetime, this tree achieved a height of 76 Feet (23 meters), a canopy span of 85 feet (26 meters) and a DBH of 30 inches (76 Centimeters). My daughter grew up playing in the sandbox we put in it's shade (now the site of the shed) and played on the swing hung from its branches. I used the TONS of leaves as mulch and the birds and squirrels enjoyed the nuts. Good by old friend we will miss you...

and I said our farewells and began plans for a replacement.

@richrollgardener and in honor of something that you and your Dad did that made a lasting impact on this earth

@richrollgardener Rich, I'm sorry you've lost this tree with special meaning for you :(

@richrollgardener
I feel your loss. We had to have our 50 year old walnut removed. Fungal infection.
And the new shade providing hammock supports will take at least 10 years to settle in.

@richrollgardener that’s a sad ending of a trees life. I used to play under old beech trees as a child and I really love these trees. Goodbye old family tree, you will be remembered.

@Ratzelbande @richrollgardener sorry, I didn’t notice, that I took Linus account. It’s me, who played under the beeches as a child. There were very old, cause they were part of a park planted on Napoleons order.

@richrollgardener two years ago we had to take down a similarly historied maple in front of my father's house. He ended up having some of the wood that came from it carved into bowls and gifted out to family members that grew up under the tree. Also in Vermont. It's oddly not dissimilar from losing a family member.
