**So what is this Defaidodon thing that people are talking about today?**

Defaidodon is a bit of a play on words, with the first part being the Welsh word for sheep (defaid - in this case a plural word), plus the second half of Mastodon, to make a new hashtag. It grew out of some silliness on the Welsh instance toot.cymru around the time when lots of people joined up.

Sheep are very important to the Welsh culture and economy, and you can't really go anywhere in the country without seeing them.

The Welsh language is also important, and it's good to be able to use it in a fun way on social media.

Here's some useful Welsh words for you:

Dafad - one sheep
Defaid - sheep plural
Dydd - day
Cymru - Wales

I forgot one very important thing: how to pronounce defaidodon.

Welsh is a very regular language, so once you know the sounds you can take a good guess at the pronunciation. It's just not like English, which is what trips people up.

Think of the word divide, change the i to eh, and make the two syllables equal in stress / length - deh-vide.

Odon is however you say the second part of Mastodon 😁

@sheepnik If a person knew both Welsh and Greek, this would translate to Sheeptooth 😆

@CommonMugwort I do appreciate a good bilingual pun.

@sheepnik I like how you just slip the v in as if they all know that already

@sheepnik Cwtch, popdi-ping, dim, all words it nanna used and are still stuck in my head. Love it!

@sheepnik Don't make up any more Welsh words please. The ones you already have are hard to learn and pronounce with old teeth

@sheepnik

Thanks. I'd been wondering about that hashtag.

@sheepnik Roedd yn un rheswm i mi ddysgu Cymraeg! / One reason for me to learn Welsh!
