As Facebook continues to deteriorate I find myself having to revisit what my lifeboat options are for the #Gorkamorka
FB group I/we run. It's the most successful GoMo community there has ever been, which is wonderful, but the platform is awful.
I wonder if anyone on the #Fediverse has put thought into how best to move a #FacebookGroups community.
@Flamekebab Can anyone host an instance for the group? That would knock out some big barriers like choosing a server and it could be moderated to your community's preferences and needs.
"Sign up here" will always be easier than "Pick a server."
(This worked well for a community I'd like to be more a part of.)
Are you exploring different platforms within the fediverse? A few people doing that would help build momentum and investment in the move as well as figure out what works best for the group
@emmaaum an instance of what though? Therein lies the rub. I'm not sure whether a discussion platform that resembles FB Groups' functionality (but much improved and not designed with deliberate malice in mind).
@jupiter_rowland I'm after some form of discussion forum. The FB side of things is irrelevant to my needs (potentially actively harmful). I don't know precisely what that looks like as it doesn't need to be a traditional forum (I like 'em, but there's a few thousand other people who might feel differently).
@Flamekebab That's why I suggested a few of you working together to explore different fedi platforms to find out what will best suit your needs.
Start with Friendica. Try others.
Other services like Matrix too.
I'm still a fan of old school forums and discussion boards but it can be hard to wean people off of the current social media styles they're used to.
Have you asked under # TTRP or whatever hashtags or groups fit? There's probably someone doing something similar.
@emmaaum There's only me in the sense of getting this sort of thing done and so far I'm despairing at how many of these projects have an aversion to screenshots.
Friendica looks like a useful FB alternative, but it's the opposite of what I'd want for this community.
Currently Discourse is the front runner - I want something that has an app (mobile-first is the reality for many of our users ).
