Reminder to my fellow cis folks today - especially cis women - email your MP.
Make noise.
Tell them that you are disgusted and less safe because of the supreme court ruling.
Tell them that you support trans people.
Let them know that the loud bigots are not the majority.
I've written to my MP to say:
Inspiration for you to write to your MP (much of it taken from here: https://fetlife.com/yolaofswords/posts/12207640)
I am, once again, writing to you as the attack on trans women in the UK continues. This time it is the UK Supreme Court's ruling in For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers [2025] UKSC 16.
1/6
It is my understanding that the Court has concluded that the term “woman" refers exclusively to biological females, excluding trans women with a Gender Recognition Certificate. This interpretation is not only anti-science and anti-feminist, it also undermines the rights and dignity of transgender people, and sets a dangerous precedent for how legal protections for all minority groups may be interpreted in future.
2/6
The judgment effectively denies legal recognition of acquired gender in a context where such recognition is fundamental to the safety, inclusion, and equality of trans people. By reducing the legal meaning of “woman” to biology alone, the Court has reinforced a rigid and exclusionary framework that threatens to marginalise trans individuals across public life including employment, healthcare, and political participation.
3/6
This decision risks emboldening discrimination under the guise of clarity. We are already seeing an immediate rise in discrimination which is well publicised in national media.
4/6
More broadly, this decision signals a retreat from inclusive statutory interpretation and may pave the way for similar restrictions to be placed on other protected characteristics, such as religion, sexual orientation, and disability. If fundamental rights can be narrowed in this way, then the principles of dignity, autonomy, and fairness which underpin the equality law are at risk.
5/6
I urge you to raise this matter in Parliament and call for legislation that strengthens protections for trans people, especially trans women, and guarantees them equality under the law - something they do not currently have.
