Yeah, with your Grampa on that. Way back I worked in a young offender institution in London, England. Uniform was jeans & polo shirt, no belt in case someone tried hanging themselves (or someone else). Having trousers (pants) hanging down became a kind of marker for boys on the street to show they'd 'done time'. I think the same happened in the US. Now even one of sons-in-law, in his 40s, masters degree, web manager in a publishing company, looks like a bad boy from 1975.
