@ryanhoulihan Same for me with ‘atheist’. People invented all this nonsense and I have to be defined by my opposition to it? No. I usually use ‘non-participant’ for that.
@aegir @ryanhoulihan in recent years the term secular humanist has come more into favor as a positive affirmation of what one believes in rather than a negative affirmation of what one does not believe in. At least, most atheists are secular humanists, I'm not sure what else there is that would fit the category of atheist and not humanist.
@aegir @ryanhoulihan isn't "non-participant" exactly the same as atheist? It's still a definition that rests on participating (or not?)
@aegir @ryanhoulihan for me, I have come to accept that people will define me, in their world view, in relation to things that are important to them. But you don't have to play their game when you define yourself
@aegir @ryanhoulihan Two of my favorite mic-drop lines I use when this topic comes up with religious neighbors, the 7th Day Adventist who wouldn't leave me alone in the hospital, etc. are the following:
1) "I do not believe in God and I am not an atheist." -- Albert Camus
@) '“And what is truth?” Pilate asked. Then Pilate went back outside to the people and said to them, “I cannot find any reason to condemn him."' -- John 18:38
