This is everything that's wrong with UK political discourse. Local elections should be about LOCAL issues - who's going to repair the potholes, get the bins collected on time, and deliver the best social care for vulnerable people.
It should absolutely NOT be in any way related to what's happening in the bloody White House, and our political parties deserve everything they get if they conflate these issues.
@DrEdBridges Pathetic, isn't it.
@dj_cthulhu And ultimately it plays into the hands of parties like Reform who have NOTHING to say on local issues but whose interests are served by discussing council elections through the prism of Westminster politics.
@DrEdBridges Exactly.
@DrEdBridges @dj_cthulhu Partly that's down to how the media reacts to tge parties, but westminster does have an outsized effect on local government, because of how it controls most of their funding. The Libdems were mocked for decades for building local campaigns around fixing potholes, sorting bin collections, and even fixing church roofs, but it's a lot harder to campaign on those things these days when you know the Council just doesn't have the money to do half of what it's supposed to.
@duckwhistle Indeed. I was a Lib Dem councillor 13 years but now slightly despair of them when I see Davey's antics. An absolute melt, as my sons would say. Letting down the many good people in that party still working hard.
@DrEdBridges
I think the attention seeking antics in the GE were reasonably effective, & was even a fair balance to the super depressing interview he gave about his son. But you can't do that all the time, it gets old fast & escalation necer helps.
Why is he dancing on ticktock when he should be in serious mode pointing out that Labour cancelled local elections because they're scared of loosing seats & thus control of how local government is going to be changed.
@duckwhistle Yeah, completely understand that the GE approach will have won over some voters - but it definitely lost some too. I shifted Green for the first time and can’t see myself shifting back at next year’s Senedd elections given all that’s happened since last July (even though the WLD leader in the Senedd is excellent).
