omfg my laptop screen has just broken again 😫 I really don't need & can't afford this.

It just smashed in the exact same corner as last time, but this time there was nothing in the way & no reason for it.

The touch screen stopped working on it last night too out of nowhere.

Alexis Bushnell (she/her)

Would I be better replacing the screen (again) & installing on my current laptop, or getting a second hand macbook?

I'm current on Windows 11 on an Asus Zenbook Duo with:
11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7.
16.0 GB ram.

I love that my current laptop has a 2nd mini screen, it is very useful for me.
It does seem to get very hot since the screen was changed last time - but it is also 4 years old.

I don't like Apple stuff but a friend said it's much more powerful.

@alexisbushnell modern macs (M1 and newer) are powerful and mostly lovely machines, but if you don't get on with apple then you won't get on with them.
They are also
very expensive to fix if they break, especially out of warranty - 3rd party repairs are often very dubious (this one had its M1 air with a 3rd party display break in a matter of months) and apple will charge over £400 for a first party screen replacement. (and still expensive second hand - this one's M1 model cost it nearly £1000, even used, about a year ago)

If you are happy running linux and your current laptop fits your needs, it would recommend replacing the screen in your current laptop. Creates less waste, too.

@soweliniko ouch that sounds very expensive!

It's been ages since I tried Linux but I don't see why I wouldn't get on with it again - I figured it might heat up less running Linux?
I would definitely prefer to just keep my current laptop I think.

@alexisbushnell Why not get a used #Thinkpad, fill it up to the brim with RAM and SSD storage and slap #Linux on it?

@jack I wouldn't have the first idea how to do that.

And my current laptop does work, it just gets quite warm and I think that's what's causing the screen issues maybe.

@alexisbushnell @jack Can you find a linux install party nearby? In Germany the Chaos Computer Club does workshops for that i think

@Nehalenia @jack installing Linux I feel fine about - I've done that before.

But all the other stuff I have no idea. I can't take it apart or do hardware stuff or anything like that.

@alexisbushnell unless you have the money, I'd go for the first option. If you have some money I'd go for a replacement laptop or a cheaper option might be a mini-pc that you can install Linux on and then plug that into a a TV Via the HDMI port.

@GnomeBones I definitely don't have the money but also I need a functional laptop for work.

@alexisbushnell I'd go for a screen replacement if you can afford that, plenty of Linux options out there. I'm using Linux Mint with Cinnamon.
