@lucywildboots @Ronkjeffries @fediversenews well I’m sure he’s been told the same things I’m saying. I saw someone run a poll on Twitter and why they haven’t joined mastodon. 30-40% voted “it’s confusing”. It’s probably the single biggest change that could make user growth faster.

His suggestion though leans perilously toward centralisation though, which is already within the “centralisation” of the fediverse inside mastodon.

@maegul @Cynthia Morse Linton @Ron K Jeffries social "It's confusing" for the same two reasons why Linux is confusing to Windows users.

One, it forces them to choose where they expect not to even have a choice.

Two, its UI and UX is not identical to what they're used to.

So they would switch to Mastodon if it was literally Twitter without Elon Musk, but otherwise 100% identical to Twitter from the official app UI to the functionality to being a centralised silo run by a Silicon Valley corporation. Change one detail, and it immediately becomes unusable for them.

@jupiter_rowland @lucywildboots flood twitter with invitation links and pull people to specific sites. Everyone can make an invite link at yourserver.com/invites - remove the choice, make it an invite. Use the one you're on, it must be decent else you wouldn't be there. Make it sound exclusive - "skip the lines join this server"

My personal thoughts: pickers need to ask "what's most important to you right now, audience, locale/language, specific community/topic?"

Audience = randomly dropped to one of the ten largest, locale = something like mastodon-near.me, community is the legacy picker
