@spacehobo what's the deal with cloudfare? Not so much your reply, but the flagging post (bot?) you replied to? Not sure about how much they claim the entire website is solar powered, I'd have to look properly for that, or is there something else?
@mzdt Cloudflare boycotts originally were from socially-minded folks who were mad that they didn't drop hate-crime-enabling sites like kiwifarms, and then afterward by Hacker News types because they *banned* kiwifarms. I've not kept up on the status of them as a provider since that, but it may have flipped back and forth a few times since last August?
The solar part is at https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/about/the-solar-website/ which used to be a novel side-version of the site. Like, you could view the site on normal petrol-burning datacentre hosting, or for fun look at the low-bandwidth solar-powered one that gave you a battery meter in the background and might not be available for a couple hours before dawn in Barcelona.
Then at some point they switched everything to be backed by the solar version. This probably changed the constraints on the solar site (I vaguely remember talk about upgrading their batteries back in the day), and I suspect that's when they put the CDN in front.
@spacehobo thanks for the explanation - I still laugh when the far right discover boycotts, they don't tend to be effective, but that's a side issue.
Not enough people consider the footprint of the internet, I know. Crypto nonsense gets a bit of bad publicity (but not enough), the rest of the internet is just as bad...
@mzdt Yeah, the anti-KF stuff was not a boycott so much as a focused media campaign spearheaded by Keffals and Ellen Murray in a pretty tense period last year. Far more effective than whining at like-minded folks to avoid something, and really took bravery from everyone involved.
@spacehobo @mzdt there is no CDN in front
@spacehobo @mzdt It could be that the old grid-powered version that was hosted by typepad was on cloudfront, but that was something typepad did and not us. The solar version has never been behind a CDN, though.
