I had A Rant elsewhere about 40k. Thought I'd post it here too.
I have Opinions about 40k. I dislike the Tau because they were a blatant cash grab of weeb money, despite the fact that pretty much everything in the entire setting is either a reference to or a blatant rip-off of something else. Immortal prescient Emperor? Dune. Arbites? Judge Dredd. Space marines in powered armour? Starship Troopers. Genestealers? Alien.
I think I hate the Tau because it was the same thing after I became self aware about it. I rationalise it as the previous instances of blatant plagiarism being before they knew the scale that weebs paid for Gundam models. My 1st Edition 40k rulebook had a guide to how you could kitbash a stick deodorant into a skimmer tank.
There was a point where it morphed from "here's how you can improvise shit to enjoy the game" to BUY MORE PLASTIC CRACK.
Somewhere in my boxes of random crap I have an issue of some tabletop wargaming magazine that included a full ruleset for a game based around Gerry Anderson's Stingray. There wasn't a set of commercial minis they were trying to push, it was just a game system that fans wanted to publish for fans.
