Rancho de la LibertadBringing in Spring, despite higher than average temperatures, we've made significant progress. Provider green beans, potatoes, butternut squash, loofa plants, yellow clover, johnsongrass and native grasses are all growing quite well, and I'm optimistic we may have something to harvest at the end of the season.The chicks we brooded are thriving, and happy, shaded by our biggest mesquite tree. Bats hang out in the evenings, as does a single owl occasionally. SiinWe've learned how to gently relocate rattlesnakes when they're sleepy and too close to high traffic areas, and I'm starting to feel more fondness than fear around these graceful creatures.I also saw the most incredibly enormous mother scorpion a week or two ago, with babies on her back. We're composting in place now, creating some absolutely marvelous earthworks that will shed water and nutrients into the gently sloping basins, and the improvement of the soil in the last four months is absolutely incredible. In the last two years we've planted over two dozen trees. We've begun working with local festivals, farmers, and livestock owners to collect food scraps and manure for compost.We're welcoming back as a full time resident a wonderful individual we met through WWOOF, growing our village. A handful of updates from the ranch, though there's lots more to share in the near future. If we critically evaluate what we define "direct action" to be, there is no limit to what we can accomplish.
