Jakob Bro - Taking Turns
Bro (guitar) is joined again by Bill Frisell (guitar), Lee Konitz (sax, in one of his last recorded appearances), Jason Moran (piano), Thomas Morgan (bass), and Andrew Cyrille (drums).
These tuns were composed by Bro and range from free-floating back and forth to more driving songs. There are lots of melodic lines being passed around, and the title is quite appropriate.
To give you an idea of what these albums are like, here's a video of Vinterhymne from December Song:
Jakob Bro - Balladeering
Part one of a trilogy written for Bro (guitar)/Frisell (guitar)/Konitz (sax)/Motian (drums), joined by Ben Street (bass). A beautiful, expressive work.
Motian died shortly after recording this, so he wouldn't continue for the other two (Time / December Song), but his style here is reflected by Jon Christensen's work on Gefion as well.
All three have been recently re-released on Loveland.
#Upcoming First time on vinyl. Originally released in 1997, “Angel Song” with #KennyWheeler, #LeeKonitz, #DaveHolland, and #BillFrisell is next in the Luminescence series. Available via #ECM, May 31st. https://ecmrecords.com/product/angel-song-kenny-wheeler-lee-konitz-dave-holland-bill-frisell/
Vielleicht sollte ich heute etwas federleichten #Jazz von Lee Konitz hören.
#GreatAlbums1950s - #LeeKonitz – Subconscious-Lee (1955). These 1949-50 sessions were a key document in the so-called Tristano school – students of pianist/ teacher Lennie Tristano who carved their own niche in 40s-50s bop. Konitz, whose alto sax also graced Miles’s Birth of the Cool, plays with clean melodicism against Tristano’s cool chords and Billy Bauer’s lean guitar. The solos, including Warne Marsh’s tenor sax on some tracks, are like fluid conversations among friends.
Sunshine & blazing heat is perfect for some West Coast #jazz. So I’m #NowSpinning #LeeKonitz Plays with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet & it’s a swinging, toe-tapping delight. Carson Smith, in particular, is stand out, particularly on the opening track. Oh, & Chet Baker makes an appearance.
This is another #TonePoet cut by #KevinGray & it really is well done. Great SQ, well put together & this particular copy cost me £3.99. Yep you read that right.
@JL32 Great story. As a cricket and rugby fan I know where I’d rather end up! Btw, do you know #AlanBroadbent middle). Piano. Superb player. From New Zealand. Performed two astonishing dates with #LeeKonitz at the #JazzBakery #LA. Among my favourite recordings.
