Media art is here 2025

Media art is here returns in 2025, once again bringing art to where life happens: on streets, squares, and in gardens. Visitors encounter forward-thinking media artworks that rethink and transform public spaces—interactive, inspiring, and freely accessible.

The exhibition features works by both local and international artists who explore the boundaries between physical and virtual space, while addressing the impact of digital media on society, identity, and sustainability. Placed directly within the urban environment, the artworks open up new, unexpected perspectives and foster dialogue between art, the city, and society.

The exhibition not only offers aesthetic experiences but also creates new forms of participation: many works invite active involvement and make media art directly accessible to a wide audience. Presented in parallel with the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival, the exhibition invites visitors to rediscover Karlsruhe through media and light art.

Media art is here is realised by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Karlsruhe in close cooperation with the ZKM | Center for Art and Media. The event is part of the Art | Summer | Technology series organized by KIT.

Program and featured artworks will be announced soon.

A moment in Otto Piene's installation Light Room (Jena) (2005 / 2017), seen in Electric Dreams exhibition in Tate Modern 2025. Oh I so wish that light artists would come up with more imaginative names for their pieces (looking at you, Robert Irwin, with all your Light & Spaces), even if in this case the name was apt. Filled with a collection of quite a classic light art machinery with perforated, rotating and reflecting parts, the space was filled with spotted and wavelike light. It felt like entering a surrealist clock. Which is always nice.

Encounter Trees – Modena x Karlsruhe

Fasanenschlösschen, Friday, June 27 at 06:00 PM GMT+2

[↓ German Version Below ↓]

As part of ArchitekturZeit, the two UNESCO Creative Cities Modena and Karlsruhe engage in a creative dialogue. The exhibition Encounter Trees – Modena x Karlsruhe explores the fascinating relationship between humans, nature, and design. At the heart of the exhibition lies the visionary work of Italian architect Cesare Leonardi (1935–2021), whose practice spans architecture, urban planning, photography, design, and art. His interdisciplinary approach combines design research with artistic experimentation—an invitation to understand design not only as form, but as a cultural force.

Encounter Trees highlights two central aspects of Leonardi’s work: his extensive tree drawings and his sustainable furniture design. Together with Franca Stagi (1937–2008), he documented over 300 tree species, analyzing their shadow patterns and seasonal color changes to inform the design of parks and shared public spaces. Starting in the 1980s, he also developed the Solids, a series of modular, handcrafted wooden furniture pieces as a sustainable alternative to industrial design.

Leonardi’s interdisciplinary approach is brought to life in the exhibition through original drawings, prototypes, photographs, and multimedia installations. Visitors are invited to freely explore different thematic areas and rediscover the interplay between design, nature, and urban landscapes in the unique setting of the Fasanenschlösschen. The exhibition is complemented by interactive workshops that encourage hands-on exploration of design principles and direct engagement with the trees in the surrounding Fasanengarten.

Continued thread

The #IBSIC25 working group meeting went fine, even if we didn't resolve all the problems of #MediaArt #Curating yet. #IBSIC was a very nice experience, meeting new and old friends, talking art, scorning entertainment, you know the drill. Next year again, if I stealthily managed to manipulate another moderator's post for me.

Anyway, #Interrail continues, I'm now on my 3,5 day journey to the next stop Skopje, going to overnight in Radstadt. 13-14 h #TrainTravel, depending on how late #DB will be.
