Didn't think Ivy smelled of anything particular. Certainly not something I'd expect anyone to pay for.

I guess they check it isn't poison Ivy - that would have unfortunate consequences if someone rubbed it over their body.

the evolution of chinese names in singapore: straitstimes.com/singapore/com

unlike *most* of my millennial peers, i have my passport chinese name NOT in mandarin / pinyin but in my dialect (teochew / chiu chow) name. i used to be ashamed of this (this was perceived to be deeply backward, in a time of mandarin hegemony and death to other chinese languages), but now i am very proud of it.

The Straits Times · Same person, but different S’porean Chinese names? How have such naming practices evolved?Singaporean Chinese names have been shaped by policy, cultural shifts and evolving notions of identity. Read more at straitstimes.com. Read more at straitstimes.com.

We know names like Jordan and Taylor have moved from the male column to the female. On an older scale, names like Leslie and Meredith did.

But is it possible for #names to move in the other direction? Because I just finished a 1931 novel in which the female lead was named Daryl.

That's not a Top 1000 name for either boys or girls, but I'd say it's much more common for boys, Daryl Hannah notwithstanding.

Agent: "So, what's your name?"

Client: "My name is Nancy."

A: "Are you sure of that?"

C: "Yes. I'm sure about my name."

A: "How about I refer to you as Julie? There's a nice name."

C: "No, I'm Nancy. That's the name my parents gave me."

A: "They did, didn't they? They had to pick Nancy, and not Julie. Those bastards!"

C: "I'd like to talk to your manager."

A: "Alright." [Picks up the phone and talks into it:] "Can you send the manager in, please? Yes. I have a difficult client."

Manager: [Enters the room] "What seems to be the problem?"

C: "Your agent, he keeps wanting to call me Julie, even if my name is actually Nancy."

M: [To the agent] "Is this true?"

A: "Yes, it is."

M: "Well, that won't do. That won't do at all."

C: [To the agent.] "See!"

M: "My colleague here made a terrible mistake. No, I see you more as an Annie. So, how about we call you Annie, instead."

C: "What?"

A: [To the manager.] "By god! You're right! She is an Annie!"

What are you devices (laptops, phones, servers, etc.) named after? My theme is greek mythology: gods, heros and monsters.
My PiHole is named after argus, the all-seeing giant. My laptop that I often took on journeys is named odysseus. The home server is named herakles, because of all the different tasks it fulfils.

I also heard of someone using place names of famous disasters like Chernobyl, Hindenburg or Deepeater Horizion.

What‘s your theme?

Boosts appreciated.
