spending my evening looking at the backgrounds of Pre-Raphaelite paintings to help me with the background of an illustration I'm working on that's got a bit of an uneven composition to it

The WIP. I'd love to go the route of having decorative vines of leaves or something but I don't want to lose the power of the orange background.

My painting. The background is a yellow orange, then there's me on a blue comfy chair. I'm curled up and leaning back with my arms folded behind my head and my ginger cat on my lap. I'm wearing a flowing green skirt and a pink grey jumper. The skirt flows off to the bottom left corner and I'm stretching into the top right corner, this means the chair is off centre to the right and the composition looks wonky, with lots of negative space in the top right and to the left between the two corners. Also worth noting the colours are quite vivid.

I suppose there's a route along these lines that won't sacrifice the orange. Potentially with the option to have some green in there too, which I would like to make work if I could

A book cover for a book called The Lost Pre-Raphaelite. There's an artwork of a wealthy woman to the left with the typography in the bottom right, but I'm more interested in the background, which has leafy branches from a big tree which would mostly be out of shot to the left. The leaves are orangey golden but it doesn't feel overwhelmingly autumnal. There's something nice and delicate about it. The woman is wearing a green dress so the artist would have had the same issue I'm having.

Anyway this feels like a breakthrough artwork and I'm hoping to do more stuff like this now.

Beginning to work in the leaves and add a bit of depth to balance out the composition. I also need to change my hair and skin tone back to something warm, sort Rusty the cat out, and I want the chair leg to be the same colour as my jumper. I'm now beginning to worry about the lack of detail in the skirt but that's something to reconsider later on.

The same painting as before but more complete. Mine and Rusty's faces have been painted on, mine looks really good but it's very cool toned in contrast with the rest of the painting. Rusty just looks too basic. I've added sort of William Morris style leaves in the negative spaces, although they have more depth than Morris's prints, which tend to be more 2D. The leaves are the same golden as the background and quite big. The general depth added to the background is barely noticeable.

Don't think I'm far off now. Rusty's face needs some serious work though. And more detail in the skirt on the bottom left maybe?

Same as before but a lot more of those golden leaves in the background, and also the lighting of the photo is a bit different and thrown off the colours in the top left. The composition now feels fine but there's a few things that aren't quite perfect - the skirt takes up a lot of space but doesn't have a lot of details, which is a bit weird.

A square painting of me curled up and lounging back off to the side on a comfy blue chair. I am wearing a pink jumper and a flowing green skirt. My ginger cat Rusty is on my lap looking majestic. The background is orange and there's a nice leaf pattern that functions a bit like a border. It's an oil painting, overall quite vivid and I was inspired by pre-raphaelite paintings and William Morris, but someone else has made a connection with 1920s French art

@csilverman thanks! I know writing alt-text is not supposed to be to my benefit but honestly it's done so much good for me and how I understand images
