The starlings were throwing some good shapes this evening.

@sheepnik do they roost at the pier all year round, albeit in smaller numbers?

Sheepnik

@helenclayton I'm not entirely sure, but I think not.

@helenclayton I suspect most have smaller roosting sites wherever they spend their days. I've read somewhere that starlings will fly up to 20 miles to get to their winter roosting sites, so that's a pretty big area to cover. Others may go elsewhere in Britain, or even migrate to Europe.

@sheepnik It’s incredible that they all come together, presumably returning to the same place each year, and falling into the choreography. Beautiful. Still yet to see a murmuration like that myself. I guess they’ll scatter to the four winds again soon?

@helenclayton Yes, it's amazing that they do manage to find their way to the same place every year. I don't know how long they've been coming here, but it's at least 20 years, and probably much longer than that.

Most will be gone by the end of next month, if not sooner if it stays warm, and then it'll be the long wait 'til October for me to see them again.

@sheepnik something to look forward to in the winter months ☺️
