It's #Easter week in #Appalachia where we finish #planting the #garden, #baking Hot Cross Buns, and enjoying #Springtime.
Silo got his Easter gift a bit early this year.
Today marks the 1st year after my mum’s passing, which also happens to be her birthday. Made a cake for her regardless. https://www.diningandcooking.com/2017428/today-marks-the-1st-year-after-my-mums-passingwhich-also-happens-to-be-her-birthday-made-a-cake-for-her-regardless/ #baking
Not a better Monday than others (how could it be?!)
But came home to kid2's further #cookie experiments or rather skills practice now, so yes in fact a better Monday than others!
[These have cut pieces from a chocolate bar rather than store bought chips; yes makes a huge diff]
Been looking forward to making a tall heart cake https://www.diningandcooking.com/2017113/been-looking-forward-to-making-a-tall-heart-cake-%e2%9d%a4%ef%b8%8f%f0%9f%a5%b0/ #baking
I’m attempting to bake proper hot cross buns for the first time. It’s one of the things I miss most since leaving the UK, just being able to buy them in the supermarket!
Some US stores sell something they call “hot cross buns” but THE BUNS ARE A LIE!! Not the same thing at all!

Not the best photos, but THE best brownies I’ve ever baked. https://www.diningandcooking.com/2016790/not-the-best-photos-but-the-best-brownies-ive-ever-baked/ #baking
Cracking hazelnuts. Preparing to bake my grandma's traditional Easter cake this week: a sweet dough roll with a hazelnut and honey filling.
Spent a week making this https://www.diningandcooking.com/2016472/spent-a-week-making-this/ #baking
Today I powered through allll the admin (including a doctor's appointment) that I'd been postponing, so I rewarded myself by baking double-chocolate chip cookies.
It was SUCH a good idea!
(I used my family's favorite recipe: https://lovingitvegan.com/vegan-chocolate-cookies/ - with my usual 2 amendments of using 2 tbs non-dairy milk instead of 1 and also taking out the cookies one minute early to give them a hard rap against the stovetop before putting them back in to bake for their final minute.)
Baking our overnight risen daily everyday #sourdough bread and the most joyful bit is the little ball of extra dough that we put in a bowl with olive oil to rise overnight and bake along with the breads. Topped with some cheese & garlic.
It makes the most gorgeous little focaccia for lunch sandwiches on a Monday.
The flour here is all organic spelt. We buy it in bulk and have again moved to making all our bread with it. It has so much flavour.
