Since I asked the question, I should probably answer it. I actually did this around that time as an 11 year old kid. What I did was I had no clue of what was good or not, so I did a smattering of ANYTHING that was popular at the time to try to figure out my taste in music.
Here are some examples:
Ace of Base - The Sign
Boyz II Men - II
Crash Test Dummies - God Shuffled His Feet
Hootie & the Blowfish - Cracked Rear View
Green Day - Dookie
Nirvana - Nevermind
Shaquille O'Neil - Shaq Fu: Da Return
No, I am not kidding.

The year is 1994. You got a flier in the mail from #ColumbiaHouse that you can get 12 compact discs for a penny! With some other fine print about buying more later. Whatever.
What 12 CDs are you going to pick for this, clearly legitimate promotion?
Cassingles in your area want to meet you.
While researching an article on music fandom in the 70s and 80s, I came across this -- something I haven't seen in decades. How many of you caught the #ColumbiaHouse bug?
