UNSW scientists have discovered 21 new PFAS compounds in Sydney’s tap water—bringing the known total to 31. One compound has never been found in drinking water anywhere before, and another is a rare breakdown product of firefighting foam. While the levels are extremely low and within current Aussie safety guidelines, they would raise concern under stricter international standards. NSW Health says the health risk is small and blood testing isn’t clinically helpful. But these findings, enabled by sharper testing, underline how much is still unknown—and why transparency and updated standards matter now more than ever.

ABC News · 21 new PFAS chemicals identified in Sydney tap water via sensitive testing methodsBy Jean Kennedy

“we'll welcome journalist Mariah Blake, author of the new book They Poisoned the World, Life and Death in the Age of Forever Chemicals, which revealed the true hazards of PFAS…after losing several friends and relatives to cancer, an unassuming insurance underwriter in Houssuck Falls, New York began to suspect that the local water supply was polluted.

Turns out it was.”

I walk into my kitchen and somebody is cooking with pfas. PFAS! People got so addicted to it, they don't know how to cook without it anymore. Here, have some forever chemicals for dinner. But at least the cleanup is easy.
(Spoiler: cleanup is just as easy with cast iron.)
Time to forever banish this forever chemical pan.

I have *a lot* of pots and pans in my kitchen. Stainless steel, cast iron, enamelled cast iron. Different sizes, shapes, depths. I just counted 43. And they're all visible. Hanging on hooks or on top of the cupboards. On all four walls. And yet it has happened twice in 2 months that somebody has come to cook in my kitchen, and not satisfied with the selection, has rummaged deep in the lower cupboards to find the lone teflon style pan that I banished years ago.

Hard choice for cattle farmer after Biloela property contaminated by PFAS — Grazier Larry Acton faces a heart-wrenching decision: sell at a loss or risk passing on "the poisoned chalice" of land contaminated by PFAS — the so-called forever chemicals — from the Callide Power Station. Recent tightening of national water-safety guidelines has amplified the stakes for his cattle operation and legacy.

"In a major victory for environmental advocates, chemical giant #DuPont and its related companies have agreed to pay $2 billion to clean up four industrial sites in #NewJersey that are contaminated with “forever #chemicals,” or #PFAS, which have been found to persist in everything from rainwater to human breast milk."

In humans, exposure to #PFAS can cause damage to the liver & immune system, & the #chemicals have also been linked to low birth weight, birth defects & developmental delays as well as increased risk of some prostate, kidney & testicular #cancers.
In recent years, states across the country have sued PFAS manufacturers, accusing them of widespread environmental contamination. The suits have also charged that the companies hid evidence of the dangers of PFAS for decades.

#PFAS are a class of nearly 15,000 #chemicals that are highly resistant to heat, water & oil, & persist in the #environment, earning them the name “#ForeverChemicals.” They are found in everyday items like nonstick cookware, water-repellent clothing, stain-resistant carpets & cosmetics, & are also used widely in firefighting foam.

They enter the environment—& #DrinkingWater supplies—in myriad ways, including from spills, landfills, factories & wastewater treatment plants.
