After three years out of the EU's Horizon research programme, UK researchers re-entry has seen them quickly ramp up the grant levels towards levels in previous programmes.

This will be good news for those universities hosting these research projects... so a glimmer of good news for the university sector, alleviating the finical crisis a little for some universities!

When I retired like many academics I had an office full of books (3500, now all sold on), but in the new faculty reorganisation currently being visited on my erstwhile colleagues, they are seeing their books treated as if they are just a nuisance for the movers, rather than (as a number have posted out) the tools of their trade.

It may be a 'first world problem' but is emblematic of the disrespect visited on academics by university mangers who see academics just as a cost!

Although this incident happened in 2018, I only learned about it in a recent issue of the TLS.

If the case is fully and accurately reported, it represents an absurd and repressive abuse of authority by a university which, alas, can only fuel the hostility towards higher education currently stoked by Reform and others on the right.
