I want a new laptop. It needs to be light and fast (i7) with decent storage.
I've got to that point where I've read too many reviews and now have absolutely no idea what to buy.
Aargh!
@gomez I've never used Linux on a laptop, nor even been tempted to even though I use Linux a lot.
Apple MacOS is based on BSD unix which is very compatible with Linux under the hood - I write quite a lot of code that easily transfers from one platform to the other.
Apple Mac is a good choice for a Linux nerd, and I count myself in that number.
@mglewis
I have two laptops using Linux currently a lightweight Lenovo on Mint and a higher spec one running debian.
Both work really well.
I need Windows on the new one as that's down to the software I need it to run, unfortunately.
@niccokunzmann
I'm heavily reliant on Endnote and Word currently.
@mglewis
@gomez as an alternative to Microsoft Word, I recommend LibreOffice @libreoffice - as the talk at the https://fossasia.org summit said - libre office is quite well compatible - better to MS office than MS office to itself. Of #Endnote, I do not know. You can try to set it up with Linux and #Wine. https://www.winehq.org/ it may be worth trying it out. If you can do it, I would be happy to know!
@niccokunzmann
I'm familiar with @libreoffice as I use that on my Debian laptop. I'm not sure about running #Endnote under wine, it might work.
However, the main thing about it is how well it integrates with Word. It saves me hours of work
